The plant is used to build the immune system and the resistance of the body towards various infections. The stem of the bark is used in dyspepsia, fevers, and many urinary diseases.
Scientific research supports providing clues to Tinospora’s rejuvenation ability to fight against various diseases. Tinospora also has powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, and anti-allergic properties. In all, Tinospora has been established firmly as antibacterial herb as it is believed to be effective in inhibiting the growth of microorganism like bacteria and powering the body against various ‘resistant’ organisms.
The main indication of the Tinospora and its Satva includes

The herb also carries anti-inflammatory and antipyretic action. In a study using human WBC (white blood cells), the herb increased the killing capability of macrophages, the immune cells those are responsible for fighting foreign materials including microorganisms
There are many uses of Tinospora. The stem is used in general debility, dyspepsia, pyrexias (fevers) and many urinary tract diseases. The bitter properties present in the drug show antiperiodic and antispasmodic properties.
It is also used as an immune-modulator in immune-suppression of certain diseases such as obstructive jaundice, hepatic fibrosis, peritonitis and sepsis. The Tinospora has been discovered very effective in preventing fibrous changes and promoting regeneration of the liver against CCl4 induced hepatic toxicity.
The herb helps in increasing the effectiveness of protective WBC (white blood cells) and builds up the body's own defense mechanism called as immune system.
Guduchi will also enhance the functioning of protective cells, macrophages and will improve body's resistance to infections. Guduchi is a very good and useful diuretic agent that helps removing urinary stones and reducing blood urea. Tinospora can inhibit growth of microorganisms and can develop immunity naturally. Tinospora has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, and anti-allergic actions.
Some of the health experts also prescribe Tinospora for some sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. The herb is useful in treating various skin diseases and in some cases, hyperacidity too.
For maximum benefits, Tinospora has been scientifically formalized by plenty of clinical studies. Its formula has been subjected to the modern examination of clinical testing to prove its benefits in gently addressing the health concerns, and its quality is controlled by the most advanced chromatographic techniques.
When the herb is dried and then pure extract is derived, it becomes the ‘Guduchi Ghana satva’. It is very fine powder that carries great properties of the herb Guduchi. The favorable thing Guduchi satva carries that even in minor doses, it works wonderfully.
Tinospora cordifolia is a large, hairless, broadleaf climbing shrub. Its stems are rather succulent with long filiform fleshy aerial roots coming out of the branches. Guduchi’s bark is grey-brown in color and warty. The shrub’s leaves are membranous and cordate. Where as the flowers are small, yellow or greenish yellow. The male flowers are clustered and females are usually solitary. The drupes are oval, glossy, succulent, red and pea-sized and the seeds curved.
The active ingredients found in the Guduchi are namely - Tinsporine, diterpenoid furanolactone tinosporidine, columbin, and ß-sitosterol, tinosporide, tinosporaside, cordifolide, cordifol, heptacosanol, clerodane furano diterpene, diterpenoid
1. A study was carried out to have evaluation of the anti-neoplastic activity of Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) in Ehrlich ascites carcinoma bearing mice. It carried out positive results on mice. (Department of Radiobiology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India by Jagetia GC, Rao SK. in Biol. Pharm. Bull. 2006 Mar;29(3):460-6)
2. The antioxidant property of T. cordifolia roots was studied by administering the aqueous extract to alloxan-induced diabetic rats. After six weeks, the levels of plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, ceruloplasmin, and alpha-tocopherol were drastically decreased. In addition, the levels of glutathione and vitamin C were elevated. The root extract at a dose of 5 g/kg was the most effective.
3. In another study, a Guduchi extract was shown to inhibit the lipid peroxidation and superoxide and hydroxyl radicals in vitro at mg/ml concentrations (Mathew S, et al. Antioxidant activity of Tinospora cordifolia and its usefulness in the amelioration of cyclophosphamide induced toxicity. J. Exp. Clin. Cancer Res 1997; 16(4):407-11)
4. In one research, ingredients in Guduchi such as syringin, cordiol, cordioside, and cordifoliosides A and B were identified as the active principles responsible for anticomplement and immunomodulatory activities (Maurya R, et al. Tinocordifolin, a sesquiterpene from Tinospora cordifolia . Phytochemistry 1998; 49(5):1343-45)
