Obesity refers to fatness in body. The fatness in the body is measured by BMI – body mass index. This is the way to decide your body weight in the relation to your height. It can be calculated by weight (in kg)/height (in meter2). If one falls from 18.5 to 25, he is having optimal weight. BMI lower than 18.5 shows that the person is underweight and above 25 may indicate that the person is overweight. A person above 30 suggests obese and above 40 is morbidly obese. The significant undernourishment is considered when a person has BMI lower than 15.
Being obese and being overweight is not exactly same. The obese person will be having large amount of extra body fat and not just few extra pounds. People who are obese are very overweight and also at the risk for many serious problems.
Obesity seems to be caused by certain complex interchange factors like lifestyle, exercise, hormones, genetics, metabolism, diet, irregularity between meals and so on. Ayurveda believes this to be pure Kapha Dosha involvement. There will be increase in medo dhatu (an adipose tissue or fats). An obese person considered to be most hatred fellow (nindaniya purusha – say nee n da nee ya poo roo shaa).
