Liver Protection

The term "liver disease" can apply to many diseases and disorders that cause the liver to function improperly or cease functioning.

Liver Cirrhosis: Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver that occurs as a result of chronic liver disease. n people who have cirrhosis, the cells of the liver are damaged and can’t repair themselves. As liver cells die, scar tissue forms. When this scar tissue builds up, blood can’t flow through the liver properly.

Causes

Cirrhosis is sometimes caused by hepatitis C (an infection of the liver), or by eating or drinking harmful chemicals. The most common cause of liver disease in the United States is alcohol abuse. This is called alcoholic cirrhosis. Other causes of cirrhosis include hepatitis B, medications, autoimmune inflammation of the liver, disorders of the drainage system of the liver. Early treatment can prevent further damage.

Symptoms:

The most common symptoms of cirrhosis include:

  • Loss of appetite, weight loss, and nausea
  • Redness of the palms of the hands
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Unusual weight loss or weight gain
  • Impotence and loss of interest in sex
  • Small, red spider-like blood vessels on the skin

Hepatitis: The word hepatitis (pronounced: heh-puh-tie-tus) means an inflammation of the liver, and it can be caused by one of many things - including a viral or bacterial infection, liver injury caused by a toxin (poison), and even an attack on the liver by the body's own immune system. Although there are several forms of hepatitis, the condition is usually caused by one of three viruses: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C virus.

Hepatitis A: The hepatitis A virus is transmitted through the feces (poop) of infected individuals. People usually get hepatitis A by eating food or drinking water that's been contaminated with feces.

Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B is a more serious infection. It may lead to a condition called cirrhosis (permanent scarring of the liver) or liver cancer, both of which cause severe illness and even death. Hepatitis B is transmitted from person to person through blood or other body fluids. In the United States, the most common way people get infected with hepatitis B is through unprotected sex with a person who has the disease.

Hepatitis C: Hepatitis C is transmitted from person to person through blood or other body fluids. Hepatitis C is the most serious type of hepatitis - it's now one of the most common reasons for liver transplants in adults. Every year, thousands of people in the United States die from the virus. And there's no cure and no vaccine.

Symptoms:

Acute Hepatitis:

  • Flu-like symptoms including fever, as well as aching or painful muscles and joints.
  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice (yellow discoloration of both your skin and the whites of your eyes)
  • Loss of weight, Loss of appetite
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Dark urine, colorless stool
  • Diarrhea
  • Enlarged, tender liver
