A strong immune system is essential for health. It is a very complex system of the body, involving the skin, intestines, nasal mucosa, blood, lymph and many other organs and tissues. Factors that impair the immune system include nutrient deficiencies, contaminated air, water and food, unhealthful lifestyles and too much exposure to harmful microbes. Other factors that weaken the immune system are negative attitudes and emotions and the presence of toxic metals, toxic chemicals and biological toxins in the body. Others are sluggish metabolism, lack of rest and sleep, excessive stress or too much exercise.
The road to a strong immune system, good health and the ability to fight of the infections taking out everyone else, is a simple one.

The immunomodulatory properties of amla (Emblica officinalis) and shankhpushpi (Evolvulus alsinoides) were evaluated in adjuvant induced arthritic (AIA) rat model. Injecting Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) in right hind paw of the animals induced inflammation. The crude extracts of both the herbs were administered intraperitonially following a repeated treatment profile. The anti-inflammatory response of both the extracts was determined by lymphocyte proliferation activity and histopathological severity of synovial hyperplasia. Both the extracts showed a marked reduction in inflammation and edema. At cellular level immunosuppression occurred during the early phase of the disease. There was mild synovial hyperplasia and infiltration of few mononuclear cells in amla or shankhpushpi treated animals. The induction of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) was significantly decreased in treated animals as compared to controls. These observations suggest that both the herbal extracts caused immunosuppression in AIA rats, indicating that they may provide an alternative approach to the treatment of arthritis.

Administration of an extract from the powdered root of the plant Withania somnifera was found to stimulate immunological activity in Babl/c mice. Treatment with five doses of Withania root extract (20 mg/dose/animal; i.p.) was found to enhance the total WBC count (17125 cells/mm(3)) on 10th day. Bone marrow cellularity (27x10(6) cells/femur) as well as alpha-esterase positive cell number (1800/4000 cells) also increased significantly (P<0.001) after the administration of Withania extract. Treatment with Withania extract along with the antigen (SRBC) produced an enhancement in the circulating antibody titre and the number of plaque forming cells (PFC) in the spleen. Maximum number of PFC (985 PFC/10(6) spleen cells) was obtained on the fourth day. Withania extract inhibited delayed type hypersentivity reaction in mice (Mantoux test). Administration of Withania extract also showed an enhancement in phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages (76.5 pigmented cells/200) when compared to control (31.5/200 cells) in mice. These results confirm the immunomodulatory activity of W. somnifera extract, which is a known immunomodulator in indigenous medicine.

The present investigations were under taken to study whether the tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) of Dalton's lymphoma (DL), a spontaneous transplantable T cell lymphoma, can be activated by the alcoholic extract of medicinal plant Tinospora cordifolia (ALTC). Intraperitoneal administration of ALTC in DL-bearing mice not only augments the basic function of macrophages such as Phagocytosis as well as their antigen presenting ability and secretion of IL-1, TNF and RNI. The results of the present investigation also indicate that the intraperitoneal administration of ALTC slow down the tumor growth and increases the life span of tumor bearing host, thus showing its anti tumor effect through destabilizing the membrane integrity of DL cells directly or indirectly. This is the first study of it's kind regarding the effect of alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia on the activation of tumor associated macrophages and showing the antitumor effect on the spontaneous T-cell lymphoma (DL), thus may have clinical implications.

Ashwagandha: Traditionally, ashwagandha has been used in many ways--as a sedative, a diuretic, a rejuvenating tonic, an anti-inflammatory agent, and as an "adaptogen" (endurance enhancer). Many Western herbalists refer to this herb as "Ayurvedic ginseng" because of its reputation for increasing energy, strength, and stamina, and for its ability to relieve stress. These studies have shown that ashwagandha does have anti-inflammatory, anti-stress, and immune-boosting properties. Various chemical constituents of the herb have shown a number of therapeutic effects. One reason for ashwagandha's reputation as a general energy-promoting, disease-preventing tonic may be its effect on the immune system. Multiple studies have shown significant increases in white blood cell counts and other measures of strengthened immunity in rodents given ashwagandha or certain chemicals extracted from the herb. The word Ashwaganda literally means "the sweat of a horse" indicating that one who takes it would have the strength and sexual vitality of a horse.
Galo (Guduchi): It is usually a component of Ayurvedic formulas designed to enhance immunity and modify a person’s response to stress. Its traditional role has been in the treatment of infectious illnesses, ranging from a cold to syphilis. It has a rejuvenative as well as detoxifying effect. It imparts the vitality and energy of youth and helps alleviate the effects of stress and promotes physical and mental vibrancy. Guduchi is also a powerful Rasayana (longevity enhancer). It increases the quality and quantity of Ojas, the master coordinator between mind and body. It helps consciousness slide into the physiology and aids development of full potential.

The route to boosting your immune system is not a difficult one and it is not surprising that diet and exercise form key parts of the process.
Your diet should be well balanced and avoid all saturated fats and as much polyunsaturates as possible with the exception of some fish oil such as tuna, mackerel etc whose oils can actually improve immune activity.
It will be no surprise that fruits and vegetables form an important part of a well balanced, immune system boosting, diet. These contain Vitamin C and beta carotene both of which increase the potency of white blood cells. Citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries, dark leafy greens, broccoli, spinach, red and orange sweet peppers are all good sources of Vitamin C and/or beta carotene.
