Hypertension or high blood pressure, more commonly known, is regarded as a silent killer. It is a disease of the modern age. The fast pace of life, the mental and physical pressures caused by the increasingly industrialized and metropolitan environments have a role to play in the rise in blood pressure.
Blood pressure is measured with an instrument called sphygmomanometer in millimeters of mercury. The highest pressures reached during each heat beat are called systolic pressure, and the lowest between two beats is known as diastolic pressure. Most young adults have blood pressure around 120/80. It increases normally with age, even going up to 160/90.
The first symptoms of hypertension may appear as pain at the back of the head and neck on waking in the morning, which soon disappears. Some of the other common symptoms are:
- Dizziness
- Palpitations
- Pain in the region of the heart
- Frequent urination,
- Nervous tension
- Fatigue and
- Difficulty in breathing.
The chief causes of high blood pressure are stress and faulty style of living. Smoking and excessive intake of intoxicant, tea, coffee, and refined foods destroy the natural pace of life and prevent the expulsion of waste and poisonous matter from the body. Hardening of the arteries obesity and diabetes lead to hypertension. Other causes of high blood pressure are an excessive intake of common table salt, and eating a high fat and low fibre diet.
If the high blood pressure is not very high, it can usually be controlled without any medical treatment. Even those patients, for whom medicines are necessary, cannot do away with other non-medical measures. Such non-medical measures work to keep the dosage of medicines to the minimum. This fact is essentially important for persons with high blood pressure because treatment for this disorder is to be continuous through out the life.
Yogasana : Asanas like shavasan, padmasan, vajrasan Yogamudra, Dhanurasan, Paschimottasan, Konasan, Matayasan and Matsyendrasan should be practised regularly. All the asanas in which the body is held upside down are prohibited.
Juices that heal : Juices of garlic, basil and wheat grass are beneficial. Juices of carrot, beetroot, cucumber, papaya, alfa-alfa and orange can be taken.
Foods that heal : Apples are considered invaluable in the cases of High blood pressure. The apple diet has rapid and considerable diuretic effect causing increased secretion of urine thus bringing down B.P. to normal. It also relieves the kidneys by reducing the supply of sodium chloride to a minimum. In addition it lowers the sodium level in the tissues because of the high level of potassium in apples. The lemon is a rich source of vitamin P and it contains 1.75 mg. of this vitamin per 100 gm. It is found both the juice and peel of the fruit. This vitamin is essential for controlling hemorrhage and for preventing capillary fragility. It strengthens the entire arterial system. Rice has low fat low cholesterol and low salt contents. It makes a perfect diet for those hypertensive patients who have been advised salt restricted diets. Calcium in brown rice is particular soothes and relaxes the nervous system and helps relieve the symptoms of high B.P.
Herbs that heal : Alfaalfa is an effective remedy for high B.P. Garlic is also one of the most effective remedies for lowering blood pressure. Pressure and tension are reduced because it has the power to ease the spasm of the small arteries. It also slows the pulse and modifies the heart rhythm besides relieving symptoms of dizziness, shortness of breath and formation of gas within the digestive track. The average dosage should be 2 to 3 capsules a day to reduce the blood pressure. Sarpagandha, prajamoda and jaundice berry also help to maintain the blood vessels in a healthy condition.

Colour therapy : For high B.P. take green and blue changed water 2-3 times daily. In case of low blood pressure, green and orange charged water should be taken 2-3 times daily.
(How to prepare the water- Take a clean bottle of the required colour and fill it leaving a small part of the bottle empty. Close the lid and keep it in sun for 6-8 hours. The orange charged water is usually to be taken within 15-30 minutes. The green and blue waters are to be taken on an empty stomach or one hour before meals. The green water is to be given early morning and on empty stomach the dosage can be to up to 6-8 ounces as it throws out foreign matter from the body and cleanses the system.
There is another way of preparing the water/medicine of any colour. Take 2-4 oz of water in a glass and hold all the five fingers or your right hand steadily half and inch above the water. In five minutes the colour water will be ready.
