It is a commonly and frequently used herb, used in fresh leaves and seeds for various kitchen vegetables and medicinal uses.
It is an erect, robust, annually grown herb, having strong scent. Its leaves are light green-coloured with yellow flowers and (thin) sharp (pointed) pods.
TURMERIC (Curcuma Longa, Haldi, Haridra)
Turmeric is an essential ingredient of various kitchen preparations and used as spice, and for its therapeutic utility it is almost an indispensable item. Application of turmeric poultice has been in vogue for healing wounds of both human beings and animals. Its plant resembles a ginger plant, and smell of its leaves is fairly sweet, fragrant akin, to mango pollen. Its fresh root is dried in the sun.
It is food preservative, a favourite and useful condiments-use in vegetarian & non vegetarian preparations. Now a days it is used for skin and beauty care to improve complexion and divests the body from nauseating odour. Obtan of Haldi is an age old device, used at the time of marriage (prior to) for both bride and groom. But, Haldi should not be used, orally or locally, in excess, as it has its own reactions.
Curative and Healing Properties

- Is a tonic, blood purifier and promotes action of stomach.

- Raises R.B.Cs. and purifies impure blood.
100 gms of edible portion of turmeric contains carbohydrates 69.4%, Protein 6.3%, Fat 5.1%, Fibre 2.6%. As for vitamins & minerals it contains iron, calcium, phosphorus, thiamine, niacin and carotene. It calorific value (per 100 gms) is 349.
Anaemia
Mix juice of raw turmeric with honey and take it daily. It will raise R.B. Cs in the blood, due to its rich content of iron.
Asthma, Bronchial Asthma, Cough and Cold
Take a TSP of turmeric powder and mix with a glassful of hot which should, preferably, be taken on empty stomach or else taken even 2-3 times. It will also cure bronchial asthma. It will also soothe throat irritation and chronic cough. To have still quicker and better results mix ½ TSP of fresh turmeric powder with 50-40 ml milk. To stop running from nose, due to cold, inhale smoke of burnt piece of turmeric.
If infants and children are suffering from cold, mix turmeric with caraway or seeds cumin (1 TSP and ¼ TSP respectively) and add to boil (letting of cool). The decoction should be sweetened with honey and given in dose of 30 ml.
Worms (Intestinal) and Intestinal Disorders
To expel intestinal worms, mix a pinch of salt to juice (20 ml) of raw turmeric, and taken daily early in the mornings for a few days. In case of chronic diarrhoea, take dry powder of rhizome (underground steps) juice, mixed with water or butter milk which also is a preventive of flatulence and a useful antiseptic.
Boils and Sprains
To hasten healing process, apply turmeric powder to boils or roast roots of dried turmeric and then reduce to ashes which should be dissolved in a cup of water and then applied over the boils—it will also ripen, mature and burst the boils and throw out the oozing substance. Apply a paste, prepared from turmeric powder and lime, and apply over sprained parts or swellings triggered by sprains.
Beauty and skin Care
Prepare an up tan (paste) from turmeric powder, sandalwood powder, coconut/mustard oil and apply over face, hands arms neck, feet etc. when the paste has dried, same may be removed and washed off with lukewarm or fresh tepid water. It will impart glow to the body parts, improve complexion, remove blemishes, acne and spots, but the paste has to be applied for some time.
