As described earlier, one should take ORS as much as possible in diarrhea condition. Give up heavy foods, oily foods, milky products, alcohol and smoking as well. Fresh fruit juice or coconut water may be taken. Avoid the entire yeast product like pizza, bread; burgers etc. maida (refined wheat flour) is highly contraindicated.
Avoid usage of fibers or the roughage for a while till the diarrhea is over. High fiber diet motivates the intestines and increases the bowel movement that results into frequent episodes of the diarrhea.
Restrict yourself having cold drinks and tea. Cheese, margarine and butter are also to be avoided. The best Indian diet for diarrhea is khichri (the combination of pulses and cereals). One can go for buttermilk (takra , say - ta k raa) which is the best as per Ayurveda. Cumin seeds ginger and lemon may be helpful. Pomegranate is one of the best fruits to be taken especially the bark powder. Avoid fruits like mangoes, plantains and dates.
During the attack especially children are to be taken to see physician if diarrhea persist for long time. Meanwhile one must give ORS to diseased person. The formula described here is an internationally accepted WHO formula…
All are in mmol/liter of sterile or super boiled and than cooled water
Sodium – 75, Chloride – 65, Glucose (anhydrous) – 75, Potassium – 20, Citrate – 10. This makes total osmolarity of 245
Here is another method that can be made at home as mentioned below…
Take one liter of boiled and then cooled water. Take 1 tsp of salt and 8 tsp of sugar. Mix all and keep in a clean bottle or pot. Homemade ORS can be given as often as the child will take it. If the child is under two year of age, it is better to give one teaspoon every minute and an older child can have sips in the same way.
The ORS is to be continued till the diarrhea is controlled. The pot is to be covered when not in use. Mix new ORS every day and throw the solution which is not being used for more than 24 hr. Breastfeeding should be continued as it supplies the immunity. Soup, rice water, buttermilk are to be continued.
