Causes of High Cholesterol

This is generally caused by the combination of the genetic factors and the diet. Person’s genes for cholesterol metabolism can deluge the system by following an inactive lifestyle, eating a high fat diet and gaining weight. In some cases, livers don’t handle even moderate amount of cholesterol and saturated fat intake so they don’t need to try very hard to have high cholesterol. Following factors may contribute to the high cholesterol:

  • The high saturated fat or high cholesterol diet – these are found in food that is animal origin. This includes beef, veal, milk, butter, cheeps and veal. Almost all processed food usually contains saturated fats. This includes palm oil, cocoa butter and coconut oils. Saturated fats are usually solid at room temperature and they include hardened liquid vegetable oils like stick margarine and shortening.
  • It is also noted that trans fatty acids (also known as partially hydrogenated vegetable oils) like in hard margarines, cookies, chips and snack crackers may also increase cholesterol level.
  • Poly-or monounsaturated fats, such as found in canola, safflower, olive and peanut oils may improve cholesterol levels if taken in moderate quantity.
  • The weight gain – overweight may increase the triglycerides and decrease good cholesterol.
  • The lack of physical activity may increase LDL and decrease HDL.
  • Cholesterol levels normally start raising after the age of twenty in both, men and women. These cholesterol levels stop after the age of fifty. But in women, this level stays relatively low until she approaches menopause but after that, they rise to about the same level as in men.
  • Certain health conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism and high blood pressure may elevate levels of cholesterol.
  • The family history surely has an effect of your cholesterol. One has to take care if the high cholesterol profile is running in the family.

To summarize all these topics, one may find the conclusion to avoid the cholesterol as below,

One who eats too much saturated fats may have high cholesterol. As described earlier, this comes with animal product so a person fond of animal products like ghee, cheese, milk products usually at higher risk.

Certain age factors like when one reaches 20, starts cholesterol levels naturally begin to rise. In men, after the age of 50 and in women after menopause are the periods of high alerts. Some diseases like hypothyroidism may cause high level of cholesterol.

It is also believed that smoking can lower your good cholesterol putting you at higher risk. Alcohol, too much non-vegetarian food comes into same categories. A person who is lazy or lack of mobility, fatty, junk food eater is prone to have this. Too much cheese, butter, ghee, curds and milky products take an individual at higher risk. A person with diabetes must be careful.
