Since years, the herb has been used as best uterine support. The herb is also useful in treating internal bleeding, vaginal discharges, hemorrhoids and also hemorrhagic dysentery. Oxytocin activity of the herb was seen in rat and human isolated uterine preparations. Estrogen-primed or gravid uterus was more sensitive to the property of the alcoholic extract. Pentolinium bitartrate completely blocked the oxytocic action.

Ashoka is well known for its effectiveness in dysmenorrhea.

Some of the researches reveal that Ashoka produces an estrogen-like effect that enhances the repair of the endometrial and stops bleeding. Ashoka is wonderful herb also that claims to cure several diseases. According to Ayurvedic medicine, it is the one herb that stands out as especially useful for treating excessive uterine bleeding. The tree of Ashoka

Saraca indica or Saraca asoka is a small evergreen tree native to India. It is popularly called Asoka or Ashoka, Ashok or Sita Ashok. Ashoka is considered as a sacred tree in India having religious importance.

Ashoka’s leaves are paripinnate and the leaflets are 6-12 in number, oblong and rigidly sub-coriaceous. The flowers of the herb are orange or orange-yellow in color, eventually turning vermillion, very fragrant, in dense axillary corymbs

Ashoka’s pods are flat, leathery and the seeds are 4-8 in number, ellipsoid-oblong and compressed.

The researches

It s timulates the ovarian tissue and facilitates hormone utilization. The bark of Ashoka tree has been subjected to many studies to document its benefits as a uterine tonic for menstruation- related discomforts, including PMS (The Indian Practitioner, Vol 51, April 1998, p.269).

The benefits of Ashoka are derived from classic Ayurveda 'tonics' combined with more specific herbs containing phyto-estrogens or having an action on the central nervous system as well as on the ovaries. Ashoka (Saraca indica) have been shown to increase estrogen levels and to normalize the endometrium during menstruation (The Antiseptic, Vol.95, October 1998, p.329).

The Ashoka possesses great antibacterial activity according to research in Indian J Med Res. 1985 Aug;82:188-9 for Antibacterial activity of flowers & flower buds of Saraca indica Linn. By Pal SC, Maiti AP, Chatterjee BP, Nandy A

Another study was performed to evaluate Ashoka’s favorable effects on uterus. The study showed great benefits of the herb for its uterine activity as researched in Indian J Med Res. 1970 Jul; 58(7):947-60 for Further studies on the uterine activity of Saraca indica Linn by Satyavati GV, Prasad DN, Sen SP, Das PK
