To get rid of the knotty acne problem, medication needs to be combined with a good balanced diet. There are food items that worsen acne, while some foods actually help in acne control and cure. You need to understand what kind of food works for you and what doesn’t, since the same food item that works perfectly fine for one person may prove to harmful for another.

Why is Diet Important? Many food items contain substances that enhance sebum production and cause acne. There are common myths that people with acne should avoid certain food items, for example – chocolates and mango. This may or may not be true; however, you must consult your dermatologist.

You should avoid all the food items that may cause acne, or that slow down or negate the effects of any medicines that you take to cure acne. A diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help you control the acne problem. For example, citrus fruits are rich source of vitamin C that is reckoned as a good antioxidant. Antioxidants accelerate the acne cure process, and work internally for healthy and clear skin. Similarly, green vegetables, fresh fruits, cereals, and milk contain good amount of B vitamins that help in quick acne control and cure.

What’s a Good Diet for Acne Control

Some food items contain good amount of vitamins and minerals, so they are recommended specifically for acne control. Though food supplements are available in the market for all kinds of nutrients, a variety of herbal and natural food items are a better option as these have no side-effects.

Herbal and natural diet have been tried and tested for acne control, and are beneficial for overall development of the body including the skin. Moreover, herbal based acne diet is cost effective as compared to food supplements. Since acne is a skin problem, you need plenty of antioxidants for healthy and clear skin.

Even if you are taking medical treatment, include a good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet chart. A basic outline of different food items and how these can help you to cure acne is given below.

Apricots, orange, peach, carrot, cabbage, and spinach are good sources of vitamin A. These products contain beta-carotene which helps in acne cure. Cauliflower, parsley, raspberry, watermelon, peach, and many green vegetables contain sufficient amount of one or more B vitamins. These foods enhance the metabolic activities of your body, relieve you of anxiety and stress, and lead to healthy and clear skin.

Guava, orange, amla in any form, lemon, and other citrus fruits take care of vitamin C requirement of your body. Vitamin C strengthens the immune system of your body and helps in growth and repair of the skin tissues.

Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant and should be an important part of your diet particularly if you have acne. The main sources of vitamin E are grapes, blackberry, gooseberry, grapefruit, plum, raspberry, sweet potato, cabbage, carrot, spinach, and tomato.

Consult your dermatologist for suggestions on healthy acne diet, and ensure that at least some of these food items are a part of your daily diet.

Food Items to Avoid

There are certain food items that you need to avoid for better acne control. Do not take oily food and fried stuff. While cooking, most of the nutrients are lost, and as a result you consume food that produces more toxins, leading to acne. It adversely affects your digestive system and as a result, the toxins are expelled through your skin in the form of pimples. So, avoid food items such as smoked fish, deep fried foods, red meat, spicy foods, acidic soft drinks, junk food, too much salt, and alcohol.

These food items not only slow down the recovery process, but also worsen the acne situation. You should give preference to fresh fruits and raw or half-cooked vegetables for healthy and clear skin.

Herbal Diet for Acne

Apart from your routine diet, include a small amount of herbal food items in your acne diet. This will help you quick recovery from acne, without any side effects. You can have one or more herbal food items as a daily practice.

A variety of herbal teas are available in market that can control acne. Green Tea Chai is one such tea that is highly antioxidant since it contains cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and black pepper. These substances have antibacterial properties and antioxidants as well, and keep your skin healthy and clear.

Aloe Vera is an excellent natural product that can help you control acne. Aloe Vera is a plant. Its raw juice is good to apply on the skin. If you do not get raw Aloe Vera in your area, get processed Aloe Vera juice from the market, and have it regularly as part of your diet.

You should have herbal food items in your diet. These may be slow to respond, however, these increase your immunity and give you healthy and clear skin, without any side effects.
